A Letter From The President

Several months back I wrote a letter to both the President of the United States, Barak Obama, and the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, the Honorable Donal Tsang.  The letters requested that each of them do what they could to help save the Pink Dolphins of Hong Kong by working to save their habitat from pollution and other interferences.  All my friends and classmates in Ms. Stephanie's 2nd grade class also signed the letter.  Well guess what, we got a response back from both of them!!  Our class was so excited when Ms. Stephanie read the letters to us.  I had my dad scan the letters so that you could read them also, if you wanted to.

Safe Dolphin Watching

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to go dolphin watching, here are a few rules you should follow so that you don't endanger or harm the dolphins:
  • Always keep a safe distance from the dolphins.
  • Never try to touch or swim with the dolphins.
  • Never feed the dolphins.
  • Never chase the dolphins, and at no time separate the baby dolphins from their mothers.
  • Always move at a slow speed around the dolphins, and never make any sudden or abrupt changes in direction.
  • Remember to respect the dolphins. Let them choose what to do and where to go.

How Can We Help Save Dolphins

We can help save the dolphins by helping save our planet:
  • Recycle as much as possible.
  • Carpool, ride the bus, or walk when you get the chance.
  • Turn off lights and other electrical appliances when they are not in use.
  • Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.
  • Reduce the amount of waste you generate.
  • Use fewer plastics bags and bottles.
  • Don't litter, and pick up litter you see.
  • Turn trash into art.
  • Use environmentally friendly products like soaps and detergents that are biodegradable.
  • For every new toy you receive, donate one of your old toys that you no longer play with.
  • Set an example for others.

Some Fun Pink Dolphin Fact

Here are a few facts about the Hong Kong Pink Dolphins that I thought you might like to know:
  • The Pink Dolphin is sometimes called the Bubble Gum Dolphin due to its pink skin.
  • Baby Pink Dolphins aren't actually pink, but are born dark grey. Their skin color lightens to pink or white as they grow up.
  • The estimated population of Pink Dolphins in Hong Kong is approximately 100.
  • Hong Kong Pink Dolphins live in groups of about three or four.
  • The baby dolphins eat milk that they get from their mothers, while the adult dolphins eat yummy things like fish.
  • The Pink Dolphins can start having baby dolphins when they are only 10 years old.
  • Pink Dolphins live to be about 40 years old.
  • A baby dolphin will stay with its mother until they are about 3 years old.
  • Sadly the death rate of baby Pink Dolphins is very high, mainly due to the poisons the mommy dolphins consume from eating fish from the polluted waters.
When I learn more facts I will add them to my list.

A Letter To The President

One way we can all help save the Pink Dolphins is by writing letters to those leaders who can come to the rescue of these wonderful animals. I have written two letters on behalf of my 2nd grade class. The first letter I mailed to President Obama. I asked the President to please contact the leaders of Hong Kong, and request them to please protect the Pink Dolphins. I sent a second letter to the leader of Hong Kong, and asked him to please save the Pink Dolphins by protecting their habitat. You too can help by sending your own letters to anyone who is in a position to help us rescue these beautiful endangered dolphins.

Please use my letters as an example for your letters.

Dolphin Habitat, Las Vegas

Over Spring Break this year we traveled to Las Vegas (which I found out is in the state of Nevada) to celebrate my Grandma's birthday.  I promised Grandma that I wouldn't tell any one how old she is, and I keep my promises.  On one of our first days in Las Vegas, we visited the Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage Hotel.  We were lucky and got to watch the trainers feed and play with the Bottlenose Dolphins.  One of the dolphins did some spins and twists for the trainer, and then swam really fast through the pool and performed four backflips.

Also fun was that right next to the Dolphin Habitat was the Secret Garden, which is home to several really cute white lions and tigers.  They didn't do any tricks, but mainly just laid around sleeping.

Pink Dolphin Watching

Last summer my family and I traveled to Hong Kong, and I got to go dolphin watching. We were on the boat for several hours looking for the Pink Dolphins, and luckily we found them. I think there were either three or four of them, and a couple of times they came right up next to the boat. It was so much fun.

The boat we were on was run by the Hong Kong Dolphinwatch. On the back of the boat was a purple dolphin flag, which I really liked, because I love dolphins, and purple is my favorite color.

I hope someday to go back and visits my dolphin friends again.

Welcome!

I wanted to say hello to all dolphin lovers everywhere, and welcome you to SaveThePinkDolphin.com.

So why are the Pink Dolphins threatened? There are several reasons.
  1. They built an airport on top of their home. The new airport in Hong Kong was built right on top of where the dolphins used to live. All the noise and pollution made the dolphins sad. It also made me sad.
  2. The dolphins live in the middle of a very busy waterway. They always have to look out to make sure they are not run-over by boats, and that scares them, a lot! I know it would scare me living in the middle of a water freeway.
  3. All the pollution, construction, fishing, and boats have reduced the number of fish that the dolphins need to survive.
